YES relaxing your hair can cause permanent hair loss IF done incorrectly. If you are relaxing your hair correctly, then no. A relaxer works by heightening the pH of your hair (up to around 10 pH) and causing a chemical reaction. In this chemical reaction, the bonds of your hair break, causing it to become straight. If you leave the relaxer in your hair too long, it can cause chemical burns which damage the hair follicle and in extreme cases can cause permanent hair loss. PERMANENT hair loss isn't common, however. Failing to rinse out the relaxer with a nuetralizing shampoo can also cause hair loss (not permanent hair loss though). After the bonds in your hair are broken and it is straight, you must bring the pH of your hair back down to normal (around 4 or 5 pH). if you fail to do this, the hair will have to stabilize itself slowly, which may cause hair loss. To tell you the truth. Depends on the hair. Some relaxers are just plain out bad for all hair. I use Olive Oil. and I don't hav problems. and Your relaxer could be good. But Without the good maintenance your hair could also shed. To give you a heads up.IF YOU GET RELAXER. I would suggest you use organic oils. Wash hair 2/3 Times a week . Deep Condition 2 times a week. Do hot oil treatments. once in while.
Well let me tell you my story. I relaxed my hair, and my almost waist length hair broke off all the way to my shoulders. I was devastated!!! I mean, my confidence was so low, I wore extensions for a year until I grew enough of my own hair back that I could cut the damage off. I'm now still growing my hair back. It's been over a year and my hair is almost to my bra strap. I will never EVER relax my hair again!
