A relaxer is basically lye or sodium hydroxide (pH 10 ) that breaks a chemical bond in your hair shaft thus removing the polymeric bends. NaOH is caustic and will burn if it is left on too long. Many women and hair companies claim that your hair can be healthy even if its chemical structure is altered. You can make your mind up about that. Having had relaxers for 25 years and suffering from burned scalps, and broken hair, I can tell you that once I went natural I am likely not going back to relaxing. Lye will do the same thing if left on too long. Remember relaxers are not reversible, they must be grown or cut out. The interface between the virgin hair and relaxed hair is also very fragile.
